The handkerchief tree is a decorative, small to medium sized picturesque deciduous tree with wide, far-reaching branches. The handkerchief tree is an unusual tree, such named because it produces purple-brown flowers surrounded by hanging creamy-white bracts in May that resemble white tissues. The leaves are fresh green and heart shaped, similar to those of the lime. They have no colour change in autumn, except for browning before falling.
Adaptable to most soil conditions but prefers nutrient rich, moist but not too dry alkaline soils. The handkerchief tree is intolerant of wetness.
The handkerchief tree should be positioned in full sun or partial shade only. It requires warmth and protection from wind.
The handkerchief tree is slow growing, approximately 20cm per annum.
Plant the handkerchief tree in nutrient rich, slightly acidic to alkaline soil types.
Shallow root system, wide spreading. The handkerchief tree is very sensitive/intolerant of being compacted.
The handkerchief tree requires sheltered sites in warm positions, protected from frosts and winds.
If any pruning is required, it should be carried out during the winter.
Small tree growing to 8 – 15 metres tall and spreading 6 – 8 metres.
