Saucer Magnolia tree flower

The sight of a Magnolia in full bloom provides an elegant, exotic presence to a garden. Saucer magnolia, also known as a Tulip magnolia, are a small deciduous tree that can reach up to 8 metres tall with a spread of 4 metres or more.

Tulip-shaped flowers, white with shades of pink appear in abundance covering the tree in April, just before leaves shoot. The leaves are light-green, oblong and 10-15cm long, turning pale yellow before they drop in the autumn.

Saucer magnolia make a good choice for small gardens and can be pruned to shape.

Saucer magnolia adapt to most soil types except chalk.

pH TOLERANCE

Saucer magnolia is best planted into soils with acidic to neutral pH levels. Slightly alkaline is possible but too much will make the plant become chlorotic.

Saucer magnolia are a great addition to all gardens as long as the soil is not calcareous or too dry.

Annual Pruning

The best time to prune saucer magnolia is during the summer months while the plant is in full leaf, between June and August. Winter or spring pruning should be avoided.
