The small-leaved lime is an impressive, majestic tree with a wide crown. A large deciduous native tree reaching 20-30 metres tall and 15 metres or more in width. A summer flowering tree with far reaching scent. Heart shaped pale green leaves turn yellow-golden in the autumn.

Features of the Small-leaved Lime Tree

Soils

Small-leaved limes are adaptable but have a preference for moderately dry to damp ground, in all slightly acid to alkaline soils, very sensitive to salt.

Location

Position in sun or semi-shade locations, likes warmth and is frost hardy. Wind resistant.

Annual Growth Rate

Small-leaved lime trees are medium to fast growing in the early years then slowing down in maturity.

pH Tolerance

Small-leaved limes preference is slightly acidic to neutral pH soils.

Root Structure

Root system is intense, cordate. They are sensitive to compaction.

Potential

A great tree choice for large gardens and open spaces.

Annual Pruning

Small-leaved lime trees respond well to being pruned. They can be used to create good tall hedging. Prune in July or August.

Characteristics

Yellow flowers in July with strong scent, one of the few native summer flowering trees.
