The silver lime is a strong, large tree with a straight trunk and broad conical to round crown, popular for landscape projects, often used in city locations. The crown is dense, conical to begin then becoming round with age. The leaves are heart shaped matt green in colour with a white tomentose under side. Strongly scented yellow pendulous flowers appear in July. Autumn leaf colour is yellow.
Silver lime is adaptable. It can grow in moist, nutrient-rich or even poor dry soils.
Silver lime needs sun, tolerates heat, likes warmth. Frost hardy.
The silver lime is a fast-growing tree, 40-50cm or more per annum.
Silver lime can tolerate slightly acid soil through to strong alkaline.
Silver lime has a deep root system with strong lateral roots, sensitive to compaction.
The silver lime will tolerate sea wind, dry conditions and can be pruned hard if required. A good tree for large open spaces and urban locations.
Silver lime takes very well to being pruned and early spring is the time for removing weak stems to keep the tree healthy. You may also want to prune the tree so as it doesn’t grow too large.
