A popular deciduous maple tree with a dense, conical rounded crown best known for its early autumn leaf colour change from green to bright red. It also has attractive winged fruits that appear before the leaves in March-April. Decorative red flowers with a subtle honey fragrance also appear before the leaves. Red Maple has a smooth, light grey bark.

Sun is preferred but Red Maple will tolerate a small amount of shade.
Annual Growth Rate
40-60cm when young then slowing with age.
pH Tolerance
The exceptional autumn leaf shades of red maple are produced best when planted in acid to neutral pH in a full sun position.
Root Structure
Shallow root system spreading mostly horizontally with many fibrous roots. Sensitive to soil and pavement compaction.
Potential
Positioning the red maple requires as much sun as possible. Shade is not tolerated other than a small amount during the day.
Annual Pruning
The red maple requires no annual pruning.
