A popular deciduous maple tree with a dense, conical rounded crown best known for its early autumn leaf colour change from green to bright red. It also has attractive winged fruits that appear before the leaves in March-April. Decorative red flowers with a subtle honey fragrance also appear before the leaves. Red Maple has a smooth, light grey bark.

Does well on nutritious acidic, sandy or loamy soil. Moist to wet. Tolerates floods, and can also tolerate drier locations. Sensitive to chalk.
