Features of Hornbeam Hedge Plants

Cool to warm locations, tolerates heat if the soil is moist.
Annual Growth Rate
Fast 40-50cm growth rate per annum.
pH Tolerance
Hornbeam will tolerate slightly acid through to slightly alkaline soil pH.
Root Structure
Very adaptable to different soil conditions. Hornbeam has a deep cordate root system with a high proportion of fibrous roots in the topsoil layer.
Potential
Due to its ability to regrow from pruning/trimming, hornbeam hedges can be shaped easily and even made into topiary shapes.
Annual Trimming
Always make a final trim of hornbeam instant hedge in September which will help leaf retention during the winter, just like copper beech.
Characteristics
Hornbeam hedges are horse friendly and can therefore be used in paddocks for the containment of livestock.
