An excellent native deciduous hedge with glossy green or purple foliage. The purple beech, Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’ variety is also known as copper beech.
Both are easily recognized in winter by means of the dead leaves that they hold onto until spring arrives.
A medium to fast growing hedge that is commonly seen at up to 3 metres high. It can however be grown much higher. Beech, Fagus sylvatica can be planted in sun or shade, even deep shade. Grows well on calcareous soils but thrives well on even slightly acid, poor soil. Has a dense, very sensitive system of roots.
Deciduous beech hedges have been used in gardens for hundreds of years and continue today to be as popular as ever.
Beech hedges are particularly popular for their winter leaves that remain on the hedges until their new leaves appear in the spring.
Winter is a good time for planting our root balled beech hedging plants. Our Elveden instant beech hedges can be planted at any time of the year.
